On October 6, Japan’s former Empress Michiko experienced a fall that resulted in a fracture to her right femur. She was hospitalized for surgery on October 8 and has since been discharged this afternoon, with plans to continue her rehabilitation at home. Remarkably, Michiko is set to celebrate her 90th birthday on October 20.
According to NHK, the incident occurred at the Akasaka Palace, one of her residences in the Minato ward of Tokyo. Following the fall, she was admitted to the University of Tokyo Hospital on October 7, where she underwent surgery.
The Imperial Household Agency has reported that her recovery post-surgery is proceeding well, and she will be focusing on rehabilitation in the comfort of her home.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time she’s faced health challenges; Michiko was previously hospitalized in September 2019 for the removal of early-stage breast cancer.
